Winterize Your Summer Styles

Sorry it has been so long since my last post dears! I was experiencing some technical difficulties, but fortunately they have been resolved now! Happy dance! I have been waiting for weeks to post this, so I hope you enjoy!

So fall is “officially” here but, it’s still feels a lot like summer in Austin! If you’re still rocking your summer styles but looking for a way to extend your wardrobe once fall arrives, read on.

We all have them. Favorite summer pieces that you’re sad to tuck away for the winter. But what if you could extend the life of your summer pieces? Good news! You can! In most cases. Here are some examples of summer 2013 trends that have been “winterized”:

High waisted shorts: Add a striped tee and a moto jacket with some buckle boots for a cool weather style!

Maxi Dresses: Top it off with a jacket and some booties in rich fall hues!

Floral dresses: Wear it with a moto jacket and some high heeled, low cut ankle boots!

Jumpsuits: Add a blazer and some stylish heels for an evening out!

Harem Pants: Pop on a scarf with a sweater and some ankle booties!

So, what do you think? Will you be able to winterize some of your favorite summer styles?

The Plaid Factor

Plaid is back and what a perfect fall style to wear! One of the big trends for Fall 2013 the tartan is trendy again as seen on runways from big designers like Celine and Moschino.

There are many ways to wear the classic check, depending on the piece you choose. I like plaid skirts, but I want to avoid looking like a school girl. Too many skirts are short and very youthful but this lovely tiered, silk number from Lauren by Ralph Lauren is a more mature version of the school girl style. I like the way the silk drapes and moves as you walk and the length is perfect for pairing with knee high boots.

I chose to add this silk top by Elizabeth and James as a shell under a structured blazer. Any neutral colored shell will do if you are choosing to add a blazer. This particular blazer I chose is from a German clothing site but there is a similar version available from JCrew. I just love the classic camel color paired with this trendy tartan skirt.

For the boots I chose a knee high style in a versatile camel color (similar here and here) which I consider to be a wardrobe staple. I paired this with this gorgeous Bella Vista Satchel from a U.K. handbag designer Beara Beara. This, too, is on my lust list for this season. Finish your style with some simple accessories like a scarf and some drop earrings and you will be looking ladylike, for sure. This is a perfect Autumn outfit for work or for play.

What She’s Wearing Now – Fall 2013

I LOVE fall! It has always been my favorite season, and with my birthday right around the corner there is a whole lotta shopping going on! So I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite pieces for Fall 2013, some new and some classics, in this edition of What She’s Wearing Now.

One of the most versatile pieces I have is this Lace Camisole from Target, it’s so cute on its own in the warmer months but I cannot wait to use it with my Autumn layers.

I just spent a few hours at Macy’s the other day (sale!) and found a gorgeous Rachel by Rachel Roy sweater dress (similar here) for only $31! Not only is this teal such a perfect fall color, it’s made of a light knit so I can wear now with booties and later with leggings and boots.

Also, while at Macy’s I snagged a super cute Kensie knit dress (similar here) This, too, is a wonderful transition piece I can wear with sandals for now and pair with leggings and boots later.

I found this awesome Calvin Klein Striped Blouse at Ross and knew I had to have it in my life! It’s a nice long length so I will pair it with leggings or skinny jeans. The Black and White trend is still going strong and this blouse will be a go-to item for sure this coming season.

I just adore these Levi’s 535 Legging Jeans in Black, they are a new addition for my fall wardrobe, but I have been wearing these in blue for a year or so. The fit is flattering and has the perfect rise for my body shape.

I have been a TOMS wearer for a few years, but it took me a bit of time to get out of the classic. I tried a pair of wedge sandals this year and loved them so much that I decided to get a pair of the Desert Wedge Booties for this fall! I like that they can be dressed up or down. I’m fairly casual so this comfy and chic style will be a great addition for my closet. I’m pretty adverse to most black shoes (don’t ask!) but I am excited to sport these suede beauties!

Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor in Ultimate Wine. My signature lip color! Just a few weeks ago the hubby and I were getting ready to attend a birthday party and I couldn’t find mine, my husband teased “How will people recognize you with those pale lips? They won’t even know who you are!” Luckily, I found it. The red lips prevailed!

When my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday, without hesitation I said Sam Edleman Maddox Booties. First, I adore Sam Edleman shoes. Hands down, my favorite shoe brand. Second, I’m a tad ‘bootie crazy’ this season so I thought the low heel and saddle color of these booties would function well with the rest of my fall wardrobe. Currently they are sitting wrapped beautifully in a corner so I can tear into them next week!

Now onto the classics:Sassybax Convertible Leggingsare by far the BEST leggings on the planet. I have been a Wolford wearer for many years and will always love their tights but these have taken over all my leg covering needs! A tad on the expensive side, but absolutely worth the investment. They are thick and cover well, and the Convertible Leggings have a pant style leg so they function well with many shoe styles. I also have a pair of their Booty-boosting leggings which are ribbed, fitted down the calf and have a shaper style to lift your booty. Think Spanx, but in leggings.

If you’ve been reading, you may recall my post on wardrobe staples. In it I had a little rant on buying good jeans, well here are mine. These Paige Denim Laurel Canyon boot cut (similar here) are my feel good jeans. I love the high quality fabric and the perfect boot cut leg. These are the kind of jeans you wear for years to come!

Last year, my favorite find were these stunningly beautiful Sam Edleman Penny Boots. I wore them everywhere. The rich, supple leather and low heel make them a classic for me. I intend to put a few miles on them once again this year.

Also, this fabulous Denim Shirt from J.Crew made quite a few appearances in my outfits over the last year. I have been waiting for the temps to cool off so I can bring it back out again.

Lastly, this maxi skirt has been a life saver for me. I started out with a similar version of this skirt which did not hold up too well. I finally decided to invest in this staple and bought the Chicos Sammi Maxi Skirt. It’s made of a fine jersey that breathes well and has a very fluid motion to it when you walk. It just drapes perfectly, and has washed very well, too! After months of frequent use it still looks new. Happy, happy!

So, that’s it! This is What I’m Wearing for Fall 2013. Tell me, is your fall wardrobe stocked and ready, too?

Unlimited Possibilities

There are a few basic items that every woman can benefit from having in her wardrobe. I have created what is called a “capsule wardrobe” which is a collection of essential clothing items designed to be interchangeable in order to maximize the number of outfits which can be created. With a capsule collection this large, there are dozens upon dozens of possibilities for outfits. Let’s take a look at the pieces:

  1. T-Shirts, 3 in neutral tones. I like to find ones that have different silhouettes to mix it up a bit. Here I have a standard scoop neck, a slightly cropped boxy one and a drapey, off the shoulder style.
  2. Button-down shirts, 2. While white is a classic that most people recommend, I hate white shirts. I always get them dirty. So, I chose an absolute must, the denim shirt and since a sleeveless option is always good to have on hand, I picked this really vibrant magenta blouse for a pop of color.
  3.  Sweaters, 3 in neutrals. There are three basic types of sweaters but they don’t have ‘basic’ at all. Provided you are coordinating with your other capsule items, just choose a pullover, a turtleneck and a cardigan. This cardigan I chose is an awesome boucle fabric with silk sleeves so its warm, but not too warm for spring or fall.
  4. Tank tops, 2. Now, I say tank tops, but I don’t mean your average, run of the mill cotton tank. Those should be considered disposable items and be replaced every year. These nice tank styles I have picked are sophisticated enough for the office or going to dinner, but still easily dressed down.
  5. Dresses, 2. This is pretty basic for dresses, but having an LBD (little black dress) that is versatile enough to wear during the day and in the evening is one item EVERY girl should have. Also, a maxi dress is pretty handy on a day when pants just won’t do.
  6. Jackets, 2. I really like this blazer and leather jacket combo here. The white blazer is super versatile and will add a little office polish to whatever you’re wearing. The black leather jacket is light enough for spring or fall, but can be worn as a blazer in winter.
  7. Purses, 3. Ladies, listen up. If you are over 30 and don’t have an investment bag yet, start saving. Look for a timeless style (like this tote below) in a quality material – it will last you a lifetime! I won’t say you need to spend thousands, but a quality leather bag is, indeed, a necessity. Also, a cross body bag for errands, concerts and casual days as well as a clutch for your more dressy affairs.
  8. Accessories, varies. I chose some basic gold jewelry here that mixes well with all my clothing items. A pair of drop earrings, a chain necklace, a watch and a statement necklace can be enough. Add some Spanx, a pair of footless tights, a scarf, a belt and a couple pair of sunnies and you are good to go.
  9. Bottoms, 4. Every woman should have a quality pair of boot cut jeans that fit like a glove. If you haven’t found them yet, seek out some expert advice. And invest some money in a good pair. One pair of $300 jeans that look amazing and last for years, are a lot cheaper than buying 2-3 pairs of $50 jeans every single year. Welcome to the Finance of Fashion. Also a pair of skinny jeans (less expensive!) an ankle skimming pair of black pants and a neutral toned maxi skirt will round out your intermixing possibilities.
  10. Shoes, 6. Finally! Some you should consider buying on the high end, like pumps and boots, others like sandals and flats you can pick up for less. I, personally need to replace my sandals every year, as summer lasts like 8 months here! So look for the following for your collection: Pumps in a neutral tone, knee-high boots, a pair of booties, some sandals, flats you can walk miles in and a pair of comfy shoes, like these TOMS.

I will put up a collection of outfits I made using just these items so you can see for yourself just how many options there are! Tell me, do you have a slimmed down capsule wardrobe or is your closet overflowing with tons of items?
